New laws planned to curb unethical adoption practices – The Straits Times (12 April 2021)
TLDR version: Singapore laws on adoption are set to undergo an overhaul with the goal of better protecting the welfare of adopted children.
In reviewing current laws and proposing improvements to adoption laws, the Ministry of Social and Family Development has actively consulted with members of the public who are stakeholders in one capacity or another, as well as studied adoption laws in other jurisdictions.
More thoughts: Singapore currently has an Adoption of Children Act, which sets out certain rules on the adoption of children.
But all laws have to be constantly reviewed and updated to keep up with changes in our rapidly-evolving society. Adoption laws are no exception, as can be seen from this report, which points to the evolving social needs, weaknesses and gaps as a driver of the need to update these laws.
The end goal is always to improve society in one way or another by creating a net benefit for people. In this case, the welfare of adopted children will be better safeguarded by more rigorous adoption rules and standards.
